15 gardening tips for July

July is finally here! It's time to relax, enjoy your garden, soak up the sunshine, and reap the rewards of your earlier gardening efforts. While you continue to water, weed, and deadhead, here are our top 10 gardening tips for July to keep your garden in tip-top shape!

Top 10 gardening tips for July

  1. As the weather heats up, it's crucial to thoroughly water your plants. The optimal time to water is in the early morning, between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. Watering during the day leads to increased evaporation while watering in the evening can leave leaves wet overnight, promoting fungal infections.

  2. Now is the perfect time to fertilize your plants! Keep them looking their best with a high-quality fertilizer. At Little Mountain, we offer a variety of NurseryLand fertilizers, a brand we highly recommend for its professional-grade results. Made in Canada, NurseryLand fertilizers are specifically designed for our local environment, ensuring your plants thrive!

  3.  Plant now for a fall and winter harvest! Root vegetables like beets, carrots, turnips, rutabagas, and parsnips can be sown now for a plentiful fall yield. If you haven't already, all squash starts should be planted in the ground.

  4. Sow salad crops like lettuce every couple of weeks for a constant supply through summer. To reduce the risk of lettuce bolting in hot weather, provide shade for the plants in the hottest part of the day.

  5. To keep your plants producing, be sure to regularly pick your fruit, such as zucchinis, berries, and peas.

  6. Pinch out any side shoots on tomatoes to focus the plant's energy on producing fruit

  7. Continue to deadhead your petunias and roses to keep them flowering. Sweet Peass and Cosmos will also flower for months if regularily deadheaded, and they make beautiful flowers for the house

  8. Cut hardy geraniums back hard when. they start to look leggy and tired, and they will produce a flush of fresh new foliage and flowers

  9. Give wisteria its summer pruning, cutting back all this year’s long whippy shoots to 5-6 leaves from the main stems.

  10. Mow the lawn regularly, raising the blades to a higher setting if the weather is dry.
